What Was Marlboro Snus? A Short History of an American Snus Test

Marlboro Snus was Philip Morris USA's test-market tobacco snus, reported in Dallas–Fort Worth from 2007. Public sources on its end date are thin. Here is what's on the record.

Marlboro Snus was Philip Morris USA's attempt at American-style tobacco snus, sold under its best-known cigarette name. Period reporting places it in test markets starting in 2007, at the same time R.J. Reynolds was testing Camel Snus.

What happened after that is less well documented in public sources, so the sections below stick to what's on the record. For the format question — tobacco snus versus a white nicotine pouch — start with the pillar, nicotine pouches vs. snus.

What Marlboro Snus was

CSP Daily News described Marlboro Snus as a tobacco pouch product. It reported four varieties — Rich, Mild, Mint, and Spice — and said the product used dried tobacco and a flavor strip to make it spit-free.

That makes it American snus: a tobacco portion under the lip, without spitting, built around a cigarette brand name. The category is explained in what is American snus, and the word itself in what snus is.

The test-market timeline, as reported

Here is what public sources say, in order, with attribution:

  • Taboka first. A peer-reviewed study on PubMed Central says Philip Morris tested Taboka, its first snus product, in Indianapolis from August 2006 until March 2008.

  • Marlboro Snus in Dallas/Fort Worth. CSP Daily News reported Marlboro Snus was already in a Dallas/Fort Worth test market when PM USA announced an Indianapolis expansion. A fan-maintained wiki dates the Dallas start to August 2007; we treat that as unconfirmed.

  • Indianapolis. The same CSP piece says Marlboro Snus would reach Indianapolis retail in March and that PM USA would end the Taboka test there.

  • Revamp. A tobacco-industry news blog quoting Altria's Q4 2008 earnings call (January 2009) reports that PM USA "repositioned," "reformulated," and "repackaged" Marlboro Snus and added a test market in Arizona.

After that, the public record we could find goes quiet. Some secondary sources say all Marlboro Snus products were later discontinued, but we found no primary source with a date, so we don't state one.

Marlboro Snus vs. Camel Snus

Both launched in the same window, from the two biggest US cigarette makers, and both used a cigarette brand name on a tobacco pouch.

Camel Snus is the one most US shoppers still see on shelves today. If you remember Marlboro Snus and want the closest current American snus, Camel is where most people end up. Other snus names are on the snus brands map.

Marlboro Snus vs. Swedish snus

American snus of that era borrowed the Swedish idea — a spit-free tobacco portion under the upper lip — but it was made for US smokers and US shelves. Swedish snus is its own tradition, with brands like General, Ettan, and Odens. The method: what Swedish snus is.

Marlboro Snus was not dip, either. Dip is fermented moist snuff that usually needs spitting: snus vs. dip.

Marlboro Snus is not a nicotine pouch

Today's white pouches — Zyn, Velo, On! — have no tobacco leaf. Marlboro Snus had tobacco in it. If you're searching because you want a modern lip product from a big tobacco company, that's a different shelf: tobacco-free nicotine pouches.

Which fits what you're after?

If you want American tobacco snus, start with Camel Snus and how to use snus.

If you want Swedish-style snus, start with General or loose snus.

If you want a white pouch with no tobacco leaf, start with what Zyn is.

If the lip pouch itself is what you'd rather skip, that's a format question: nicotine tablet vs. gum, lozenge, and pouch.
