"Grizzly snus" usually points at one of two cans. Grizzly is best known as an American moist snuff — dip — from American Snuff Company, and since 2024 the same name has also been on a line of nicotine pouches with no tobacco leaf in them. Neither one is Swedish-style snus.

If you want the format question first — tobacco portion versus white pouch — start with nicotine pouches vs. snus. This page sorts out which Grizzly you probably mean, and how to tell from the lid.

What people mean by "Grizzly snus"

Most searches come from one of three places:

1. Grizzly moist snuff. Long cut, fine cut, and pre-portioned dip pouches. Fermented tobacco, usually a lower-lip product, usually with spitting. 2. Grizzly Nicotine Pouches. White, leaf-free pouches that sit under the lip like Zyn. 3. Habit language. Some people call any lip product "snus," the way a different brand name becomes the generic word.

None of those is the pasteurized Swedish tobacco portion described in what Swedish snus is. For the word itself, see what snus is.

What Grizzly is: moist snuff first

American Snuff Company's brands page calls Grizzly its flagship and says it launched in 2001, with Long Cut Wintergreen as its signature style. The company says Grizzly is a category leader in moist dip and moist pouches.

That is American moist snuff. It is tobacco that is cured and fermented, cut, and packed in the familiar round tin. The "pouches" in Grizzly's dip line are portions of that same dip tobacco, not white nicotine pouches.

How dip differs from Swedish snus — lip position, fermentation versus pasteurization, spitting — is laid out in snus vs. dip. If you came from a white pouch and wonder how it compares with a tin of dip, see Zyn vs. dip.

Grizzly Nicotine Pouches: same name, different can

In 2024 American Snuff Company added Grizzly Nicotine Pouches, which it describes as "for consumers who prefer nicotine products without the tobacco leaf." Grizzly's pouch FAQ says the pouches contain no tobacco leaf or other tobacco plant matter apart from extracted nicotine (on the styles that use it).

The same FAQ answers two questions this page gets asked a lot:

  • Are they dip? No. Dip is fermented, has tobacco leaf, and requires spitting.

  • Are they snus? No. Snus is heat-treated and includes tobacco leaf. Both are spit-free, but the pouch has no leaf.

The pouch line has its own page: Grizzly nicotine pouches. The wider leaf-free category is tobacco-free nicotine pouches.

Read the can

Because one bear sits on more than one product, the lid is the only reliable answer.

  • Says moist snuff, long cut, fine cut, or "pouches" with tobacco described. That is Grizzly dip. Lower lip, usually spit.

  • Says Nicotine Pouches, no tobacco leaf. That is the pouch line. Upper lip, spit-free, white pouch.

  • Says snus. Check the maker. Swedish-style tobacco snus in the US is more often General or American snus such as Camel Snus.

Strength numbers and flavor names differ by can and change over time. This page doesn't reprint them or rank them.

Grizzly vs. real snus brands

If you actually want tobacco snus, the brands people usually mean are mapped in snus brands. The short version:

If "no spit" is the real goal, spitless tobacco explains what that label does and doesn't mean. Spit-free is about mess, not a health claim.

Which Grizzly fits what you're after?

If you like the tin and the lower-lip habit, Grizzly moist snuff is what you have been buying. Calling it snus won't change what is inside.

If you want a white pouch with no leaf, Grizzly nicotine pouches or other tobacco-free nicotine pouches are the right shelf.

If you want true tobacco snus, start with how to use snus and pick from the snus brands map.

If the problem is having anything under your lip at all, a different bear on the lid won't fix that. That is a format question, covered in nicotine tablet vs. gum, lozenge, and pouch.

Frequently Asked Questions About Grizzly Snus

Is Grizzly snus?

No. Grizzly is an American moist snuff (dip) brand, and it also sells nicotine pouches. Grizzly's own pouch FAQ says the pouches are not snus, because snus is heat-treated tobacco leaf.

Who makes Grizzly?

American Snuff Company, a Reynolds American company. The company says Grizzly launched in 2001.

Are Grizzly Nicotine Pouches the same as Grizzly dip?

No. The dip is fermented tobacco that usually needs spitting. The nicotine pouches, added in 2024, have no tobacco leaf and are spit-free.

How do I tell which Grizzly I have?

Read the can. "Moist snuff" or a tobacco cut means dip. "Nicotine Pouches" means the leaf-free line.

Is Grizzly the same as Swedish snus?

No. Swedish snus is pasteurized tobacco, usually under the upper lip, and typically spit-free. Grizzly dip is fermented American moist snuff.
